Theodore C. “Ted”  Flato, 86, passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at his home after a battle with cancer.

Born in Portland, Ore. and raised on Puget Island by his mother and father who relocated to the U.S. from Norway. As a child, Ted often acted as a translator for his folks, who were learning the English language.

In 1944, Ted was drafted into the Navy and served in World War II. Upon his honorable discharge, he spent most of his life working as a meat cutter and market manager. Ted married Bernice on Dec. 13, 1974 and helped her raise her three children. They spent many happy years together and enjoyed dancing, dinners out, trips to their beach house and clam digging.

He was 100 percent Norwegian and looked forward to annual Lutefisk dinners with the Sons of Norway. Ted was a life member of the Elks and the Eagles, an avid reader and history buff. Ted was a young 86 and loved to stay busy working in the yard, until he no longer had the energy to do so when the cancer took over. He was easygoing, mild-mannered and well-liked.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Flato; children Sheryl (Jeff) Williams, Victoria Teegarden and Richard Hill; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ted will be entombed at Longview Memorial Park. There will be no service at his request. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society.
