County’s homeless survey Jan. 23-24

4:33 pm January 10th, 2014

The Tacoma-Pierce County Coalition to End Homelessness is recruiting for 100 volunteers to conduct the county’s annual survey of homeless populations on Jan. 23-24.
Data from the survey provides a picture of local homeless issues and leverages public and private funding for homeless housing and services, said Charlene Hamblen, chairwoman of the Coalition to End Homelessness. Local agencies with homeless assistance include Bethel School District, which helps families with students.
Volunteers can sign up by calling Rae Anne Giron at the county’s Community Connections at (253) 798-6931. Training sessions for volunteers are scheduled for Jan. 13, 15 and 17 in Tacoma.

Why waist your time on the homeless. They have it better than those who do have homes and apartments as they do not have to pay for the costs. When and if they do choose to live in a home or apartment and see how much it costs they will purposely leave and return to homeless. Most of them are there because they want to be that way. With us feeling sorry for them they grow with it and suck up the attention in which they strive for. How do I know this? Because I grew up in a pretty healthy home and mom worked at Seattle Pub Library. When I was 14 I spent lots of time on the streets and when old enough I placed myself homeless but living in a car….understanding those who live on the street as well as the homeless. Their lives are as they are. If they want the change they will accommodate that on their own. I never forgot the famous Seattle’s bag lady who was very wealthy. And refused to use her wealth to remove herself from that lifestyle. Her reasoning was…..why should I feed the rich and wealthy with my money. I earned it and I have a right to determine where it goes. After that statement….I understood. From age 17 to 23 I learned how to remove myself from the streets. Family always helps and from that point the achievements to prevent that lifestyle grew. Any one of those homeless people can move on up if they wanted to. But as they proven to me…..they dont want to. Hugs to you all!!!

Mr. Watson has a right to his opinion, but it’s one I disagree with. Most homeless people have had more than their share of unfortunate circumstances that got them to where they are now, on the streets. It’s not a good life and most don’t know how to get out of it. To say that they all have the choice to be there is a stretch. Your example of the “famous Seattle bag lady” is an anomaly if it was even factual. They are there because of many reasons but I doubt it’s a real life choice.
I don’t know about you, but I pray to God that someone would reach out and help me should such a fate befall me.

Glad that the Tacoma-Pierce County Coalition to End Homelessness is leading the way to greater awareness and for helping in a meaningful way for the homeless in our area. I will contact Rae Anne Giron to see how I can help. Thanks! ~Tillie
