An exciting new web stream site has been created on the Internet: Nisqually Valley Community Radio.
Found at http://nisquallyradio.com, it is the brainchild of Marcella Zengota. From Alder to Olympia , NVCR seeks to celebrate the life, culture and beauty of our unique and precious valley.
"We're all about building community," said Marcella, 35, who was born and raised in Yelm, but now lives in McKenna. "We want people to share their ideas, their news, and their music!"
NVCR is a web stream radio service, meaning that it is a constant presentation of programming, just like a regular radio station except that it is on the Internet. That means one must have a computer to listen to NVCR, which cannot be heard on a regular radio.
Since NVCR is a web site there are many pages of text to browse or links to click on when one is listening, such as the home page of the band currently playing. In a way, it is like reading a newspaper while you're listening to its radio air play.
At present, most of the programming consists of music, and of course, local artists are featured, such as David McCarthy, Ike Thunder Hawk, and Saving Arcadia - all musicians from Yelm. In addition, Marcella has her father, Corky, a long-time singer-songwriter from Roy , in heavy rotation.
"I hope we can get Randy Oxford, soon, too," Marcella said. "He's great."
However, one of the requirements for receiving air play on NVCR is a waiver of royalty payments. As a result, most of the air stream is from bands in the early stages of their careers.
Marcella got the idea to start NVCR after she had spent years coordinating Karaoke contests regionally and nation-wide.
"I was the USA Hostess for Karaoke Championships for three years. After that, I was burnt out," she said. After a period of rest and contemplation, Marcella decided upon the web stream radio idea, and formed Nisqually Valley Community Radio last fall.
"Originally, I started it as a hobby - something to keep me busy and something that could help the community," she said.
But, after advertising the station on Craig's List the response was huge, especially from musicians wanting air play, so Marcella quickly had a professional business to manage.
"We had 1,700 hits the first weekend we were on the air," she said proudly, but with a weary tone.
Besides the music, there are news reports, stories and commentaries on the web stream, while on the web pages there are community calendars, art galleries, and "how-to" sites, such as pages for cooking and home-brewed beer.
