The Eatonville Cruiser boys’ basketball team traveled to Bend, Oregon, over the holiday break to play in the Bend Holiday Tournament from Dec. 27 – 29.

The team played some tough competitors while there; they dropped their first game 60 - 39 to a skilled Seattle Academy team. In their next game, the Cruisers pulled out a win against Sammamish High School, 63 - 54. In their third and final game of the tournament, the Cruisers fell to Grants Pass High School 58 - 30. Although the team didn’t fare as well as they had hoped, it was a great bonding experience that brought all the players closer, which will help them out for the final stretch of the season.

After the holiday break, the Cruisers kicked off the new year when they hosted the Yelm Tornados in a non-league match up on Jan. 2. Senior guard Jarod Humphrey had the hot hand for the Cruisers during the game by dropping 15 points to lead the Cruisers to a 59 - 49 victory.

The Cruisers followed up the Jan. 2 game by hosting the Highline Pirates in a league game on Jan. 4.

Humphrey continued his hot shooting and scored 18 points in the game. In the end, the night would belong to senior guard Tristan Schoepf.

The game was close all night long with the Cruisers leading 50 - 48 at the half. It stayed close until the last few seconds of the game. With 12 seconds left on the clock the Cruisers brought the ball up court only to have an errant pass stolen by Highline who then scored the go ahead basket to take the lead, 68 - 67. With six seconds on the clock, the Cruisers inbounded the ball to Schoepf who sprinted up court. As he crossed over the mid court line, he would was tripped up by a Highline player.  As he fell forward, he threw up a prayer (so to speak) as the whole crowd in attendance held their breath, waiting to see if the ball would make it into the basket.

With less than one second left on the clock, the shot fell. Schoepf was given a foul on the shot and was able to go to the line for a free throw. He missed, but it didn’t matter.

The Cruisers would prevail with a final score of 70 - 68.
