Aid car and truck collide, send five to hospital

By Pat Jenkins The Dispatch Two Graham Fire and Rescue paramedics rushing to the scene of a house fire last Saturday wound up going to a hospital instead as victims of a head-on crash between their aid car and a pickup truck. The accident occurred at about 7 a.m. in the 23800 block of State Route 16 GÇô also known as the Graham Hill. The truck, which was northbound, crossed the centerline of the highway and collided with the southbound aid car. The paramedics and occupants of the truck were taken to hospitals for medical treatment. The paramedics, whose injuries were relatively minor, were released after being treated at Good Samaritan Hospital. The conditions of the other three victims wasn't known but reportedly weren't life-threatening. The vehicles were heavily damaged. Assistant fire chief Steve Richards said Monday that the aid car will most likely be considered a total loss. He described the accident scene as frightening. "It was gut-wrenching pulling up and seeing the wreckage,GÇ¥ Richards said. The aid car was on its way to a fire at a house at 110th Avenue East and 270th Street East. A firefighter suffered a minor injury at the scene and the aid car was headed there as a backup, Richards said. The house was destroyed by the blaze. Richards said the cause of it appeared to be suspicious, as the residence was unoccupied, had no electricity and was boarded up. The Pierce County fire marshal was investigating that fire and another one, also at an empty house, on 278th Street. Both fires drew a response from Graham Fire, Ortng Valley Fire and Rescue, South Pierce Fire and Rescue and Central Pierce Fire and Rescue.
