Eatonville double trouble for Rochester

Eatonville's Cruisers used Rochester as a springboard into the 2016 high school baseball season by beating the Warriors on consecutive days last week. The Cruisers hung on for a 10-9 victory Thursday after pounding Rochester 9-0 the day before, giving them a 2-0 start in Evergreen League competition. In Thursday's contest, the score was knotted at 3-3 until a five-run explosion for the Cruisers. When with two runners on and two outs, Jake McCormick singled to score both runners and later came around to score on a single by Joel Rodriguez. The rally kept going and was capped by a two-run single by A.J. Goetz to drive in Brooks Moeller and Rodriguez, giving the Cruisers what seemed to be a commanding 8-3 lead. But Rochester battled back with two runs in the fifth inning and another run in the sixth. Eatonville added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh when Moeller hit a two-out, two-run single to score Andrew Streich and McCormick. Those tallies ended up being vital after the Warriors scored three more times in the bottom of the seventh inning to come within a run of tying the game. McCormick, Moeller, Goetz and Streich each finished with two hits. With their first two non-league games canceled because of rain, the Cruisers had to open the season with an Evergreen matchup. And they did it in style, putting up nine runs on 11 hits last Wednesday. On top of that, starting pitcher Colin Streich was in mid-season form, Eatonville coach Mike Moeller said. Streich threw five innings without allowing a run or walking anyone, spreading out five Rochester hits and striking out eight. Eatonville got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Justin Brandt singled in Goetz with two outs. And then with runners on second and third, Jacob Henricksen singled to center to score Jay Brymer and Brandt, giving Eatonville an early 3-0 lead. Brymer and Brandt collected two hit apiece, Henricksen had two RBIs, Jared Henricksen drove in two runs with a double, and Moeller scored twice and stole two bases to pace Eatonville's attack.
