Epic sweetness in all shapes and sizes

By Carolyn Augustine Contributing writer Donuts shaped like spaceships, dinosaurs and astronauts, with wonderful flavors like Gilligan's Island, a vanilla cake donut topped with chocolate icing and coconut sprinkles, a gummy Life Saver and an umbrella, and the Elvis Presley (peanut butter and banana) can all be found at Epic Donuts. Tucked away in a corner of the busy shopping area that is South Hill, Epic Donuts is a cozy, busy store with cases filled with donuts of every description. Prices range from standards like glazed and cake at 99 cents, to Epic Eddie the astronaut at $3.99, and they are tasty. Coffee and soft drinks are available, also. The space travel-themed decor entertained us as we stood in line at the carryout-only store and ordered a plain glazed, a chocolate cake donut with chocolate icing, a banana cream pie, a banana split, apple fritter and coconut cream donuts. They were delicious. Light and fluffy, with fresh frosting and fillings. The plain glazed was outstanding and one of our favorite donuts. It was crispy, light and not greasy. The chocolate cake donut was loaded with chocolate, rich and warm. The banana cream was chewy and gooey and fun to eat. The apple fritter was delicious, loaded with chopped apples and sugar glaze in just the right amount for that traditional crunch. The Banana Split donut was filled with whipped topping for the vanilla, frosted with chocolate icing and topped with toasted banana chips and a maraschino cherry. It was fun and filling. If you like donuts as a special treat, Epic Donuts is worth checking out. Donuts can be pre-ordered and start at $19.95 a dozen. Parking is plentiful but crowded and the best selection is early in the day. Special orders are welcomed, and catering is available.
