Improvements at Camp Muir mulled

A public meeting in Ashford this week is part of the discussion of a National Park Service proposal to rehabilitate Camp Muir at Mount Rainier National Park.
Depending on plans that have been studied in an environmental assessment, work on the base camp for climbers of the mountain could include replacing or removing some structures while retaining others that have historic significance, officials said.
Meetings are planned for Thursday at the park's headquarters in Ashford (55210 238th Ave. E.) and next week in Tacoma on a date and at a location to be announced.
The first in the three-meeting series was held last Wednesday at REI in Seattle.
The meetings are set for 6 to 8 p.m., park officials said.
More information, and opportunities to comment on the plans, are available online at: http://parkplanning.nps.gov/muirea. Comments can also be mailed by Sept. 10 to:Superintendent, Mount Rainier National Park, 55210 238th Ave. E., Ashford, WA98304.
