In memory of the fallen

A military honor guard from Joint-Base Lewis McChord participated in a flag ceremony at Bethany Lutheran Church Cemetery that was part of Memorial Day observances in south Pierce County. The annual service hosted by the church May 25 in Spanaway included a firing detail, local dignitaries, and 109 people who attended. Among them were Phil Raschke, a retired Army major who was an attack helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War. He accumulated 48 Air Medals during his two tours with air cavalry units. Other Memorial Day events in honor of military veterans and those who died serving their country included a service at Fir Lane Memorial Park in Spanaway, where Army Lt. Col. John Williams was the guest speaker, and a ceremony at Washington Veterans Home in Orting, featuring Army Col. Louis Stout of Joint Base Lewis-McChord as the guest speaker and a unit from Bethel High School's Junior ROTC as the color guard.
