Something the federal government did 98 years ago will get visitors into Mount Rainier National Park for free Aug. 25. The creation of the National Park Service Act on on that date in 1916 is celebrated as the parks system's birthday through waivers of the standard entrance fees at national parks throughout the U.S. Two more of the free-admission days that are coming up before the end of this year will be on Sept. 27 in recognition of Public Lands Day and on Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day. Other free days each year include Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan 20, Presidents Day Weekend Feb 15-17, and the opening weekend of National Parks Week (April 19-20). Visitors to Mount Rainier are reminded by park officilals that work on the Nisqually to Paradise Road project is continuing, creating the potential for traffic delays inside the park. Roadwork is scheduled for weekdays between 7:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Motorists should plan on delays of up to 30 minutes. There is no road construction on weekends.
