Racing cars cause motorcyclist's death

A 61-year-old man has died as a result of a collision between a car and the motorcycle he was driving April 19 in the Spanaway-Frederickson area. The Pierce County Sheriff Department identified him as Rollin Lee Gray, a Tacoma resident. The collision occurred at 10:45 p.m. in the 3100 block of 182nd Street East. Investigators said two cars were racing westbound on 182nd when one of them passed the other one, reportedly causing the passed vehicle to go out of control, cross the centerline and hit the motorcycle, and then crash into a mailbox and a fence. The motorcycle and Gray were found by a witness in shrubs on the side of the road. Gray had suffered severe injuries to his leg, head and back, authorities said. He was taken to a hospital for treatment but died April 21 due to the injuries from the accident. A spokesman for the Sheriff Department said the drivers of the cars are from Spanaway GÇô one an 18-year-old male and the other a 16-year-old male. The younger one had a learner's permit but not a driver license. The older driver, who was driving the car that passed the other one shortly before the accident, left the scene. He was found later by deputies. Both drivers were cited and released pending further investigation. Authorities said neither driver appeared to be impaired.
