Rainier Independent Film Festival this weekend

A 38-film lineup has been announced for Rainier Independent Film Festival, which is back for its ninth year May 15-17 at venues in Ashford. Joining the selection of international, national and regional films will be several filmmakers, including two who attended the festival (RIFF) in previous years. "The ShootGÇ¥ is the third film that John and LuLu Adams family have had at RIFF. Two years ago, their "Knuckle JackGÇ¥ won Best Audience Award. Also in attendance will be the makers of the opening-night film, "Booze, Boys & Brownies,GÇ¥ and the closing-night "WildlikeGÇ¥ and "Land of Leopold.GÇ¥ Information and the full schedule is available at rainierfilmfest.com. Some highlights: -+ Among the documentaries is the award-winning "Growing Local.GÇ¥ -+ In addition to bringing some choice films to RIFF, guest curator Warren Etheredge will lead a cinematrography workshop on May 17. -+ "Booze, Boys and BrowniesGÇ¥ - written, directed and performed by Veronica Mannion - is a musical that takes a humorous look at a young actress' foes and follies as she tries to make her way through a busy but entertaining life. Mannion will attend a post-film discussion following the 7 p.m. screening on May 15. -+ Festival Awards that will be presented following the closing-night screenings include Best Student Film, Best Short Documentary, Best Full Length Documentary, Best Narrative Short, Best Feature, and Audience Favorite. -+ All film projection is with the latest digital technology. Organizers of the festival say it is dedicated to providing true independent filmmakers an opportunity to have their films screened. Mixing films, workshops and the laid-back setting of the Mount Rainier area is a departure from usual the hustle and of the business, a RIFF spokesman said.
