Serious clowning at rodeo

Cowboys and cowgirls will fight for their rodeo lives in the Puyallup Pro Rodeo this weekend. And Danny Newman will have their backs in terms of keeping them safe.
Newman, who's from Eatonville, is scheduled as one of the rodeo clowns/bullfighters for the event being held at the Puyallup Fair Saturday and Sunday. His job is to protect a fallen bull rider from a rampaging bull by distracting the animal after it's thrown a rider to the ground. The clown part of the gig is to entertain the crowd. Newman, 42, has been ranked in the top 10 in bullfighting seven consecutve years. The rodeo competition is scheduled for 1 and 6:30 p.m. Saturday, followed by the finals at 1 p.m. Sunday. At stake are berths in the national rodeo finals in Las Vegas, Nev. The Puyallup rodeo, featuring the top 24 competitors in each event, is part of the Justin Boots Playoffs series.
