"Vaping is a community'

By Tillie Vuksich Contributing writer The vapor shop in downtown Eatonville is under new management. John Ensell, the new owner, celebrated his grand opening with a vaping party Oct. 3. There were at least 20 people in attendance that Saturday night, socializing and vaping. The event marked one month of Ensell doing business at his second Makin' Some Vapes location. He recently celebrated his one-year anniversary at his Lakewood location. The University Place resident said he likes the community of Eatonville and will be joining the local Masons, who own the building where he rents his storefront on Mashell Avenue South. Vaping is the term used to describe the cloud of vapor that e-cigarette users inhale and exhale. There is no smoke emitted from an electronic cigarette, only vapor. It is a trend sweeping the nation, one reported to help people kick their addiction to cigarettes and nicotine. "I was a smoker for 12 years,GÇ¥ said Ensell, an Army veteran, husband and father of three. "But I quit when I was introduced to vaping. I kind of nerded out. Vaping is a community like no other. We support each other to stay off cigarettes.GÇ¥ Because vaping is such a new market, regulations and studies are minimal. Currently, there is great debate over its safety and health benefits. Those who are active in vaping believe it to be a healthier option to smoking cigarettes. The Eatonville Town Council, acting on what it called health concerns about vaping, last month approved regulations that prohibits vaping in the town's public parks. Ensell, when asked about the rule, said, "I understand they want to protect children, but the CDC (the national Centers for Disease Control) has shown there's no secondhand effects." From the street on the evening of its grand opening, Makin' Some Vapes looked like it was filled with smoke so thick you could only make out legs and the shapes of people. Upon entering, the hazy cloud didn't sting a visitor's eyes like smoke from cigarettes, and the smell was like cotton candy Ensell sells many brands and varieties of juice (the liquid used to make vapor) and says his favorite is Peach Apple by Kraken's Revenge. Not all the juices have nicotine. Some are nicotine-free for hobbyists, while others have varying amounts of nicotine to help people wean themselves off cigarettes.
