Public can learn about community plans

About 60,000 more people are expected to move to unincorporated communities of Pierce County by 2030, according to the state Office of Financial Management. And starting this month, county officials will use public forums in some of those communities to help get ready for the growth.
The county is updating its community plans for Frederickson, the Parkland-Spanaway-Midland area, and South Hill. Residents can attend open houses to discuss the updates, community identity and issues, and provide feedback.
The first such session will be held May 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Meridian Habitat Park in South Hill. The park is at 14422 Meridian E.
The rest of the forum schedule is:
• June 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Spanaway Elementary School at 412 165th St. S.
• June 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Pierce County Library Administration Building (3005 112th St. E.).
• June 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Frederickson Elementary School (17418 74th Ave. E.).
Citizens will be able to talk to representatives of Planning and Public Works, the county’s Parks and Recreation Department and Sheriff Department, and Pierce Transit.
Among other things, the community plans call for concentrating growth along State Route 7/Pacific Avenue, State Route 161/Meridian, and 176th Street East.
“We want to hear from the people who live, work and play in our communities,” said Dennis Hanberg, director of the county’s Planning and Public Works Department. “We need to create a plan for our unincorporated suburban areas that represents the people who live here and supports thriving, livable communities with housing, jobs and services.”
The plans eventually will be sent to the county’s Planning Commission for preliminary approval this fall. A final decision on them by the County Council is planned for this winter.
