Car hits pedestrian, flips; one hurt

A car wound up on its top and a pedestrian was rushed to a hospital after an accident Oct. 3 on State Route 161 near the intersection with 264th Street East. According to the State Patrol, the pedestrian, identified as David Scharpf, 62, of Puyallup, was standing on the northbound shoulder of the highway and trying to stop traffic so he could clear debris from the roadway. The car, driven by Gayle Huseby, 79, of Graham, struck some of the debris, went out of control and hit Scharpf. Both ended up on the highway's shoulder. Scharpf suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a Tacoma-area hospital. The car’s driver escaped serious injuries, the State Patrol reported. The northbound lane of the highway was blocked for several hours after the accident.
