SUV with expired tabs yields arrests, gun

A suspicious automobile in a Graham-area neighborhood yielded a veritable treasure trove of arrests, a potentially stolen handgun with ammunition, and possible drug paraphernalia in the wee hours of the morning last Wednesday.
According to the Pierce County Sheriff Department, two deputies on patrol spotted the white sports utility vehicle at 1:10 a.m. on Jan. 31 in the 20400 block of Eustis Hunt Road East. When they made a U-turn to follow it, the SUV turned into a mobile-home park in what deputies figured was an attempt to hide from them. So they waited a block away and pulled the SUV over when it emerged the trailer park.
The vehicle’s license tabs were expired and it had a non-transferred title. Its occupants were three men a woman. One of the deputies recognized the female and knew sye had two warrants for her arrest for domestic violence assault and criminal trespass. She also had multiple hypodermic needles, and a plastic baggie was observed in plain view inside the SUV. The officers arrested her and booked her into the county jail.
That’s also where a 19-year-old man in the SUV wound up after the deputies frisked him and found a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun hidden in the waistband of his pants and loaded with ammunition. They arrested him for being a minor in illegal possession of a firearm. He told them he knew he needed to be 21 to have a handgun, but said he was homeless and needed it for protection. He also said he was “pretty sure” the gun was stolen when he bought it on the street for $200.
A check of the gun’s serial number showed it wasn’t registered and not reported as stolen. But Sheriff Department officials said anyone who thinks it might be theirs should provide them with its serial number and a description.
