Bearcat Beat | Spring sports start, MHS wins at DECA competition

Last weekend, over 30 Monroe High School (MHS) DECA students competed at the state level. Cathryn Armstrong, Jessica Cichanski, Macey McGovern, and Megan Rich will all be advancing to nationals, which is at the end of April in Orlando, Florida.
DECA students have been going down to Park Place the past few weeks and will be going again on Friday to sell Bearcat gear. The students felt it was a good opportunity to give their middle school peers because they remember being young and not having gear to wear to games.
Last week was classified staff appreciation week, so five students in ASB organized a potluck for all the classified staff on Wednesday during their lunches. In addition, the students also made a wall with the staff names in a special gesture of gratitude.
The MHS Hi-Q team won semi-finals last week and will be competing again Tuesday, March 17.
In addition, MHS has been running elections for ASB. The current ASB class and elected classroom representatives voted to change the election process this year to better fits the needs of the student body. Two weeks ago, class presidents and the ASB president were determined: sophomore class president is Jackie Kelly, junior class president is Ethan Medlin, senior class president is Janae Vasatka and next year's ASB president is Kaylee Boone. And this week, next year's student body will be voting on class officers (vice president, secretary and treasurer).
The rotary club students of the month, seniors at the high school, have been organizing a citywide food drive that several schools and local businesses will be participating in the week of March 23 to March 27. On March 27 and 28, there will be bins at local grocery stores to collect non-perishable food items.
Speaking of food drives, GSA hosted one last week at the high school as well.
Spring sports are beginning their first games this upcoming week. The baseball team will be playing March 18 at 4 p.m. versus Arlington at Arlington High School, on March 19 at 3:45 p.m. against Ballard at Ballard High School and on March 23 versus Squalicum at Marshall Field.
Boys golf will begin March 17 at 3 p.m. against Snohomish, Jackson and Lake Stevens at the Mill Creek Country Club.
Softball girls play March 17 at 3:45 p.m. away at Redmond High School and on March 19 at 4 p.m. against Archbishop-Murphy at Marshall Field at MHS.
Girls tennis has matches on March 17 at 3:30 p.m. against Marysville-Getchell at MHS and March 20 at 3:30 p.m. versus Everett at Clark Park.
Boys soccer plays on March 17 at 7 p.m. against Arlington at Arlington High School and on March 30 at 7:30 p.m. versus Edmonds-Woodway at MHS.
And last, there will be a track meet March 19 at 4 p.m. called the Juanita Jamboree at Juanita High School and on March 21 at 11 a.m. for the Ram Relays at West Valley freshman campus hosted by West Valley High School in Yakima, Washington. There's also an all-comers meet on March 23 at 3:30 p.m. at Lake Stevens High School.
The countdown is on. There are only 13 school days left until spring break, which takes place the first week of April, 53 school days left until graduation on June 6, and 58 school days left until the last day of school on June 15!
