Monroe's annual kickoff of the holiday season is coming up, and the Chamber of Commerce is looking for volunteers to help spruce up the downtown ahead of the big event.
The cleanup is scheduled for Saturday Nov. 16, from 9 a.m. till 3 p.m.
"We are inviting the entire community to come out with brooms, rakes, shovels, pruners, power washers, tools, weed eaters and blowers,GÇ¥ said chamber director Annique Bennett.
Already Bennett and other chamber personnel have rounded up nine shopping carts that were abandoned in the downtown area.
Bennett committed the chamber to helping get carts back to stores in the future.
"We know that we can't stop folks from taking them from the stores and leaving them in downtown, but we as a chamber can work with the community and the stores to get these carts collected more regularly,GÇ¥ she said. "Citizens who find these abandoned carts can push them to the Masonic Lodge (which houses the chamber office) and we will make arrangements to get the stores to pick them up.GÇ¥
The city has also sprayed all the weeds in the sidewalks and grassy areas.
Now volunteers are going to pull the weeds, pick up trash and power wash sidewalks.
The volunteers will meet at the Chamber of Commerce in the Masonic Lodge at 125 S. Lewis St. where there will be coffee and snacks.
