Good friends Eric Grewal (left) and Evan Wang were recently named semifinalists in the prestigious National Merit scholarship process.The two Monroe High School seniors, along with Edmund Lai, received preliminary recognition in the scholarship program last spring. Recognition in this program is based on scores from the PSAT test, taken junior year.
Both young men worked hard for this recognition. "This is a great honor for me because it shows how my hard work and preparation have paid off,GÇ¥ said Grewal.
Grewal is a full time Running Start student this year, taking organic chemistry and cellular biology at Cascadia Community College in preparation for his post-high school work towards a career in the biotechnology field as a researcher and entrepreneur. He is applying to 13 colleges this year, and hopes to attend a school with a strong science background.
"All high school students worry about college, and I'm certainly no exception. I feel this makes me a more competitive applicant,GÇ¥ said Wang.
Wang is applying to public and private schools on the west coast, and plans to pursue a course in engineering. He is also a full time Running Start student attending Cascadia Community College. He is taking a heavy course load in math and science including Linear Algebra and differential Equations.
Approximately 16,000 students are designated as semifinalists nationwide, based on their score on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT-«) and on state representation. Semifinalists must meet additional requirements to advance to finalist standing, and approximately 8,400 have traditionally received a Merit scholarship award each year.
