Mill Creek-based McClure and Sons, Inc. was awarded a $1,148,318 contract for water treatment improvements by the Eatonville Town Council at its June 22 meeting. The money comes from a grant via the state capital budget administered through the Washington State Public Works Board to construct a third water filter and converted clear water well. Resolution No. 2020-I passed unanimously.
The water filtration plant has been operating with two filters, instead of the three for which it was intended. The plant is not facing any problems. These improvements are redundancy measures meant to mitigate a failure, especially during the summer when water consumption is at its highest. A third filter and clear water well would help ensure Eatonville remains at water capacity.
In other business, the council passed a motion selecting Sep. 12-13 of this year for a scheduled power outage by the Bonneville Power Administration to repair leaking oil from a substation transformer. Plans call for power to be out from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. on those dates. The outage and repairs had previously been scheduled for June, but those plans were put on hold because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Councilmember Emily McFadden was elected mayor pro tem for a six-month term beginning July 1 and ending Dec. 31. Councilmember Bill Dunn was elected as an alternate.
The council discussed the possible use of Coronavirus, Relief and Economic Security Act funding for which the town is eligible in the amount of up to $89,000. Earlier this year, Congress passed the CARES Act providing more than $2 trillion to combat the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Washington state will receive an estimated $2.95 billion to help state and local governments fight the disease.
Eatonville, as a sub-recipient of federal dollars, must work with the state to move forward on the funds being distributed.
No final decisions were made regarding the money, with the council indicating it would have some more concrete proposals at the next meeting.
