County Council declares April as National Fair Housing Month

The Pierce County Council passed a resolution at its April 12 meeting recognizing the 54th anniversary of the Federal Fair Housing Act and proclaiming April 2022 as “National Fair Housing Month” in Pierce County.

The 1968 act expanded on previous acts by prohibiting discrimination concerning the sale, rental and financing of housing based on race, religion, national origin and, since 1974, sex. Since 1988, the act has protected people with disabilities and families with children. Pregnant women are also protected from illegal discrimination.

The council confirmed the appointment of two new members to the Pierce County Accessible Communities Advisory Committee: Shannon Okean and Jennifer Spane. Three existing members were also reappointed to the committee: Amin Hester, Joy Cochran and Cheri Coleman.

A resolution to ratify the transfer of certain county-owned surplus real property was continued until the April 19 meeting of council.
