Six roads in Mount Rainier National Park have been closed to vehicles for the fall/winter season. They include Mowich Lake Road, Paradise Valley Road, Stevens Canyon Road, Sunrise Road, Westside Road and White River Road. Meanwhile, the Nisqually entrance to the park area remains open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, unless hazardous conditions require temporary closures, park officials said. The higher elevation gate on the road from Longmire to Paradise is closed nightly to ensure visitor and staff safety. After 4 p.m., no uphill traffic is a allowed in order to give time for to exit safely. Officials ssaid road, weather, and avalanche conditions in the are being evaluated each morning to determine when it is safe to open the road above Longmire. All vehicles entering the park must carry tire chains in case they become necessary. The requirement is in effect until May 1 next year.
