The Dispatch salutes the local heroes who make their communities stronger. The Eatonville, Spanaway and Graham areas will benefit from a combined donation of $24,500 from Health Care Providers Council of Pierce County to 20 senior centers and six other community organizations in support of seniors. The financial gifts, which were formally presented during a council meeting Dec. 8, are made possible through donations, event income and special fund-raising by members of the council (HCPC). Senior centers receiving checks for $1,000 apiece include Eatonville Family Agency and Spanapark Senior Center in Spanaway. A $750 donation was made to FISH Food Banks of Pierce County, whose locations include one in Graham. “The needs of seniors and their families and caregivers is our number one priority,” said Joan Engle, president of HCPC. “Special events like the annual Alzheimer’s Caregiver Conference and Making the Link, monthly fund-raising from our members, and annual membership fees further assist the work of our local senior centers and valuable non-profit organizations here in Pierce County.” Other senior centers benefitting from HCPC’s donations are Beacon Senior Center in Tacoma, Bonney Lake Seniors, Buckley Senior Center, Fife Community Center, Gig Harbor Senior Club, Key Peninsula Community Center, Lakewood Senior Activity Center, Lighthouse Activity Center in Tacoma, Mid-County Community Center in the Summit area, Milton Activity Center, Orting Valley Senior Center, Point Defiance-Ruston Senior Center, Puyallup Activity Center, Salvation Army Senior Center in Puyallup, Steilacoom Community Center, Sumner Senior Center, Tillicum-American Lake Senior Center in Lakewood, and University Place Senior Center. Additionally, $750 donations were presented to Honor Flight, the organization that flies World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit a war memorial there, Senior Pet Food Bank, Gig Harbor Basket Brigade, Tacoma Rescue Mission and Catholic Community Services. HCPC, a non-profit organization that promotes service, care and well-being for older and disabled adults, draws its 160-plus members from among senior-service organizations, senior housing providers, healthcare organizations and individuals offering specialized or discounted services to seniors.
