Volleyball: Cruisers make mark as individuals and team

Two members of Eatonville High School's volleyball team and the squad as a whole have been singled out by the South Puget Sound League for their performances during the 2016 season.

Sammie Swartout, a junior middle hitter, was named to the All-2A SPSL second team from the Sound Division, and senior Jenna Fitzgerald received honorable mention.

In other voting by the league's coaches, Eatonville won the Sportsmanship Award.

During the recently completed regular season, Eatonville finished sixth with a 3-11 record (3-13 overall) in the eight-team Sound Division.

Steilacoom, the division's champion, and second-place Orting dominated the all-league player honors.

Sophia Spoja, a sophomore outside hitter for Steilacoom, was named Most Valuable Player.

Two Steilacoom seniors – middle and outside hitter Nneka Amamilo and Ally Dilley, a setter – were picked for the first team.

They were joined by three playes from Orting – Sarah Fohn, a junior setter; Marin Sasaki, a senior outside hitter; and Tatum Tripp, a senior setter.

Rounding out the first team is Emily Chisa, an outside h itter for River Ridge.

Another Steilacoom player, senior Leilani Meneses, was named Libero of the Year. The award recognizes the top defensive specialist.

Steilacoom and Orting reached the state tournament, staged Nov. 11-12 at St. Martin's University. Both teams bowed out in the first two rounds of matches.

White River, from the North Division, was the SPSL's top finisher in the state tourney. The Hornets placed fourth.

In addition to Eatonville's Swwartout, the selections for All-SPSL second team honors included Sarah Cooley, a senior libero for Orting; Emily Hunkin-Clark of River Ridge, a junior middle hitter; Terra Jarrell of Steilacoom, a senior middle hitter; Anna Michelbrink of River Ridge, a senior setter; and Georjina Solia of Clover Park, a senior outside hitter.
