Becker takes GOP leadership role in Senate

By Pat Jenkins The Dispatch Fresh from her re-election, Randi Becker has received a vote of confidence from her fellow Republicans in the state Senate, as well. Becker, who is about to start her third term as a senator from Eatonville and the Second Legislative District, was elected caucus chairwoman by the the Senate Majority Coalition Caucus Nov. 15. Caucus chair and majority leader (Mark Schoessler, who's from Ritzville) are the top two leadership positions in the coalition. Becker’s responsibilities will include setting the agenda for and presiding over caucus meetings, and representing the caucus on operational matters. “Serving my caucus in this position is truly an honor,” said Becker. “I’m flattered that my colleagues have entrusted me with this leadership role.” She said her bipartisan style can help the caucus and the Senate as a whole on issues such as "lowering college costs, increasing education funding, and improving our state’s transportation infrastructure." “I have a well-known history of working collaboratively with members of my caucus as well as legislators across the aisle, while keeping the people of Washington squarely at the center of everything we do,” said Becker. Becker was re-elected Nov. 8 to another four-year term. She received 61 percent of the votes in her race against Democrat Marilyn Rasmussen in the district that covers south Pierce County (including Graham) and part of Thurston County. Becker was first elected to the Senate in 2008, beating then-incumbent Rasmussen by about three percentage points. She won a second term in 2012 with 56 percent of the votes.
