$10 million a year for state cancer research

Cancer research-related legislation championed by state Sen. Randi Becker has been signed into law. Senate Bill 6096, a response to changes in federal funding that put Washington in jeopardy of losing researchers, creates a state fund of up $10 million per year to pay for cancer research, said Becker, the bill's prime sponsor. The state funding is included in a new two-year state budget approved by the Legislature this month. "Supporting cancer research and ensuring that we can continue to see life-saving breakthroughs happen in our state is a huge priority for me. The money that is meant for this important work cannot be diverted and will remain available to researchers,GÇ¥ said Becker, a Republican from Eatonville whose Second District constituency includes south Pierce County.
