Mount Rainier National Park will observe National Public Lands Day this Saturday with free admission for the public and volunteer projects. The National Parks Conservation Association will help coordinate registration registration of volunteers beginning at 8 a.m. at Longmire, six miles inside the Nisqually entrance to the park. Shortly after 9, participants will divide into work groups led by Washington Trails Association members and Park Service employees. They'll do trail maintenance around Paradise and restoration work in a campground at Longmire that's used by volunteers and school groups. A park spokesman said volunteers should be prepared for cool, wet weather with warm clothing, rain gear, sturdy footwear and gloves. They should also bring water, snacks and a lunch. Free camping will be available at the Longmire campground Friday and Sunday for the volunteers. They can reserve a site at Joshua_Jones@partner.nps.gov. Free admission to the park Saturday will be for everyone in the public, regardless of whether they volunteer. National Public Lands Day is an annual celebration of public involvement in the stewardship of America's national, state, and local parks and forests. Nearly 2,000 people volunteered at Mount Rainier this year, a park spokesman said.
