Efforts to quell a forest fire near Alder Lake continued to make headway last week. According to the U.S. Forest Service, the 280-acre fire was 19 percent contained. Officials reported "minimalGÇ¥ growth of the fire, and the primary objective of firefighters was still to prevent its spread eastward. A week earlier, authorities estimated the fire will be contained by Oct. 1. The fire was started Aug. 11 by lightning and is in an area of rocky, steep terrain on the Lewis County side of Alder Lake. One of the nearest points on the Pierce County side is Elbe, about four miles from the fire location. As of last week, 55 personnel were involved in the firefighting effort. That was down from a high of 124 personnel, officials said.
