ATVs OK on town streets

All-terrain vehicles that usually are restricted to off-road use can start showing up legally on streets inside Eatonville, the Town Council has decided. An ordinance approved by the council Dec. 14 gives wheeled ATVs the same kind of access to streets as other vehicles, as long as they're licensed and registered and their drivers obey traffic laws the same as automobiles and trucks. The council noted ATVs are popular and could generate recreation-related commerce. Eatonville's regulations are virtually identical to state laws. ATVs being driven on roads must be registered as on-road vehicles and be licensed accordingly. The state Department of Licensing charges fees of $18 for an off-road license or tag and $12 for an on-road tag, and also requires ATV drivers to carry the vehicle's registration with them when driving. In addition, ATVs adapted for on-road use must have headlights, tail lights, turn signals and rear-view mirrors. A windshield also is required unless the driver wheres goggles or a face shield. If all the rules are met, Eatonville's ordinance will allow ATVs on any of the town's streets that aren't posted as closed to ATVs. Drivers must be at least 16 years old and have a driver license.
