Enough people eating pancakes next Wednesday will help the Eatonville Fire Department do its job.
From 9 a.m. to noon on July 4 at the Eatonville Visitor Center on Mashell Avenue, the public can have a breakfast of pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, coffee, milk and juice for a suggested donation of $5. Fire chief Bob Hudspeth said the proceeds from the fund-raiser will be applied by the Fire Department toward purchases of specialized training and equipment, training, uniforms and public education materials.
The event, timed to take advantage of the Independence Day holiday and the likelihood of people being in the mood to be out and about, is being organized by Eatonville Firefighters Association, a separate entity of the Fire Department. Hudspeth said the "current economic climate" has made it necessary for the association - a combination of volunteer and paid firefighting personnel - to use its non-profit status "to assist the citizens of Eatonville in ways that the town's budget doesn't allow at this time."
Items purchased with fund-raised money will be the property of the association, which can donate them to the town to enhance the Fire Department.
Successful fund-raising could also result in money being used in ways "that will assist us in giving more back to the community in the future," Hudspeth said.
He said no one will be turned away from the breakfast if they need a meal but can't pay. "We'll cover it," the chief said.
And as for those who can pay, "no larger donations (than the suggested amount) will be frowned upon," he added.
