Candidates filing; presidential primary underway

May, the month that politicians in Pierce County and followers of the presidential nomination process have circled on their calendars for a long time, is here in a big way. Local candidates will officially file for their campaigns for office next week with the county auditor, who last week mailed ballots to voters for the Washington presidential primary election. Voting in the latter continues until May 24 Offices affecting south Pierce County that are up for election this year include three that are countywide GÇô county executive, sheriff and assessor-treasurer GÇô County Council, state representative in the Second Legislative District that includes the Eatonville and Graham areas, and U.S. representative in the 8th Congressional District, which also spans some of those locales. Pierce County Superior Court judges also will be decided. The primary election is in August, followed by the general election in November. Voting began May 6 in the presidential primary. Ballots must be returned by May 24 via postal mail or in official drop boxes. The results will be used by the Republican Party to determine delegates for its national nominating convention, although Donald Trump is considered the presumptive nominee. The Democratic Party is basing its delegates on the results of caucuses that were held in March.
