Centennial Elementary School in Graham has been named a School of Distinction for the third year in a row by state education officials. Centennial, which is part of the Bethel School District, is one of 90 schools across Washington being honored for sustained improvement academically over a five-year period in reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and math. The award this year is going to 51 elementary schools, including Centennial, plus 20 middle or junior high schools and 20 high schools that are in the top 5 percent of improved schools. The award is presented through the Center for Educational Effectiveness (CEE) in partnership with the Association of Educational Service Districts, the Association of Washington School Principals, Washington Association of School Administrators, and the Washington Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development. Greg Lobdell, chief executive officer of CEE, said the success of the schools is proof "that significant improvement is occurring across all our diverse public schools.GÇ¥ He said the schools are in all regions of the state and in large urban communities and small ones. Some schools have high levels of poverty among their students and are serving high numbers of challenged learners in special education. CEE conducts student-learning research for public schools in the western U.S., analyzes standardized-test results and consults with school districts.
