'Chorus Line' kicks up its heels

By Pat Jenkins The Dispatch It must be nice to be as fresh and exciting as you were almost 40 years ago. That's what "A Chorus Line,GÇ¥ the 5th Avenue Theatre's current production, has going for it. The 1975 Broadway classic had the audience enthralled during the Sept. 11 show (a nice relief from the somber anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks) and no doubt will continue to do so through the final presentation Sept. 28. The iconic songs such as "OneGÇ¥ (you know, "singular sensationGÇ¥) and discussions of homosexuality and dysfunctional families still feel relevant, to the credit of the musical's original director-choreographer (Michael Bennett) and musical director (the legendary Marvin Hamlisch). Both men are gone, Bennett having died in 1987 from AIDS-related lymphoma at the age of 44, and Hamlischin in 2012 at age 68 due to respiratory arrest. But their work lives on in "A Chorus Line,GÇ¥ presented in highly satisfying (and high-kicking) fashion by the largely local actors-singers-dancers and director David Bennett.
