County unemployment 6.1 percent

August's unemployment rate in Pierce County was higher than the statewide average and matched the national level, state officials reported. The 6.1 percent jobless rate was the same as the U.S. Washington was at 5.6 percent. Among counties that neighbor Pierce, Lewis County had the highest unemployment at 8.5 percent, followed by Yakima County at 7.1 percent, Thurston County at 5.5 and King County at 4.9, according to the state Employment Security Department. The department hasn't announced figures for September.
