Most of Comet Falls Trail at Mount Rainier National Park has been temporarily closed because-áits deteriorating-ácondition has made it too dangerous for hiking.
The closure, announced Tuesday by park officials, begins one mile beyond the trailhead. A washout approximately 10 feet wide and 30 feet deep undermined the trail and created hazardous conditions that were made worse by rain the last few weeks. In addition, snow and ice in the area adds to the hazard, especially if a hiker attempts to walk around the collapsed part of the trail, officials said.
No date has been set for when the trail will reopen. But next week, a park crew will begin building a route around the washout, and the public will be notified when the trail is open again, officials said.
