Eatonville marches into quarterfinals

Cruisers take Wright path to quarterfinals
George Tomal had such an impact on the Evergreen League regular season that coaches of the league's football teams named him its Most Valuable Player. And now his reputation is carrying over to the 1A state high school football tournament. Tomal, a senior running back, scored three of Eatonville's 10 touchdowns in a 72-34 rout of Wright in a first-round game Saturday in Tumwater. The Cruisers, now needing two more victories to reach the championship game, will face Mount Baker this Saturday in the quarterfinals. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Civic Stadium in Bellingham. Mount Baker won its first-round contest 41-26 last Friday over Montesano, one of the Evergreen squads that fell to Tomal and company this season. Against Wright, Tomal's first two touchdowns - on a run of 22 yards and an eight-yard pass play with quarterback Jake McCormick - helped keep his team ahead in the first half in a game that didn't start out like a blowout. Eatonville, traiiling early 6-0, led only 20-18 in the second quarter. But the margin ballooned to 41-18 lead at halftime.as Ryan Franz ran 38 yards for one touchdown and one yard for another, and Johnathan Warner caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from McCormick (Read more in the Nov. 19 print edition of The Dispatch)
