Fall Fest: An event for everyone

If it's October, this must be Fall Fest. The sixth annual community event for all ages and abilities will be staged again this Saturday at Eatonville Middle School. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the event will invite the public to embrace disability awareness, learn about community resources and connect with other community members, said Tina Schmidt, chairwoman of the festival's planning committee. Fall Fest is a local salute to October as Washington State Disability History Awareness Month, which recognizes contributions to society by people with disabilities. With that comes some fun and information, courtesy of an organizing committee of seven mothers of children with disabilities. The group is headed by chairwoman Tina Schmidt and includes Gretchen Sharpe, Michelle Frink, Kerri Murphy, Shannon Powell, Shanna Littrell and Linda Schier. Here's what's in store Saturday: " Best pie bakeoff. Bring your best pie and a $5 donation/entry fee. Judging at 12:30. Announcements of the winner at 1 p.m. " Best of show. Bring your biggest zucchinis, reddest tomatoes and other vegetables for harvest sharing and judging. Harvest will be donated to Eatonville Food Bank. " Booths with information about community resources. " Eatin' in Eatonville, a sampling of food from area restaurants. " Entertainment and education focusing on what people can do, rather than what they can't do. " Local hand-crafted items for sale. " A coloring contest, a petting zoo and games for kids. A kids' photo booth will be sponsored by Clara Link Photography. Entertainment will include Sassy the Clown and music by Emily Hill and Tom Mitchell. Donations will be accepted for Eatonville Food Bank, the Lions Club (eye glasses) and Benita International Children's Organization (clean and unused medical supplies).
