The fees for vehicles to enter Mount Rainier National Park and for camping at the park will increase by $5 beginning this Friday. Park officials announced the increases Monday. They said the new single-vehicle entrance fee will be $20, and the rate for individual camping sites will also be $20. The new vehicle fee is lower than the $25 that had been proposed last year when the National Park Service revealed that higher fees were being considered at parks nationwide in order to generate more revenue for maintenance and improvements of the park system. The $25 fee is still coming, however. Officials said it will take effect May 27, 2016. The camping fee won't increase again next year, officials said. With few exceptions, there has been no increase in national park fees across the United States hsince 2006. Last year, in order to provide funding necessary for key projects and programs, all 131 fee-collecting national park sites, including Mount Rainier, evaluated potential fee increases. As a result, the entrance fee at both Mount Rainier and Olympic National Parks was proposed to increase to $25 for a seven-day vehicle pass based upon an updated rate schedule to be used by all park sites that charge fees. The new fees will be in effect for the three-day Memorial Day weekend that begins this Saturday. -รก
