The state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) increased its Industrial Fire Precaution Level (IFPL) to 4 this morning, requiring a full shutdown of logging and other industrial work in forests.
The order, formally issued at 12:01 a.m., is in effect for portions of the western slopes of the Cascade Mountains range in Pierce and King counties until further notice.
The same ban applies to state forestland in Mason County near the Olympic Mountains.
IPFLs apply to all industrial operations that may cause a fire on or adjacent to land protected by DNR. The level below a 4 calls partial shutdowns that prohibit some activity and restrict the hours for others.
In addition to DNR, the precaution criteria is used by the federal Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Indian Affairs for forests they control.
IPFL information available at 1-800-527-3305 and www.dnr.wa.gov is updated each day at about 5 p.m., officials said.
A burn ban on all DNR-protected land is in effect through Sept. 30.
