Fire district and kids practice prevention

South Pierce Fire and Rescue observed the annual Fire Prevention Week by hosting an art contest for students at three elementary schools in the Bethel and Eatonville school districts. The contest, held in conjunction with visits to the school by firefighters to discuss fire safety with students, produced winner at the different grade levels. They included: " From Weyerhaeuser Elementary in the Eatonville district, kindergarteer Alexi Jadin, first-grader Connor McIlraith, third-grader R.J. Nickolaus, and fifth-grader Mike Ramsey. " From McKenna Elementary in the Bethel district, second grader Morgan Ramey, third-grader Braiden Johnson, fourth-gradee Tylr Oglesby, fifth-grader Ivan Ramirez, and sixth-gradet Dallas Pierce. " From Roy Elementary School, kindergartener Kolten McGuire, second-grader Colten Jorgenson, fourth-grader Angela Gehl, and fifth-grader Zachary Ernst. The winners were invited to a pizza party sponsored by Varsity Pizza at a South Pierce Fire and Rescue fire station on Nov. 22. They received a certificate of recognition and posed for pictures. In addition, their artwork will be displayed at the fire station for one year. Firefighters led by Lt. David Chase made presentations at each school about the importance of home smoke detectors, plans for exiting homes in case of a fire, and family emergency plans.
