In a reversal of the first time it went before voters, Fire District 23's levy is passing in the general election. Proposition 1, which supporters say is critical to paying for fire protection and medical services in the Ashford, Elbe and Alder areas served by the district, had a 50.5 percent yes vote - 171 votes for it to 167 against it. It was rejected in August by an almost identical margin of 163 to 158.. The measure asks voters in the district to renew the existing property levy at a higher rate GÇô $1.50 per $1,000 of assessed valuation instead of the current $1.03. District officials have noted that the tax isn't new.
