Fire levy passing by one vote

Ten days after the general election ended, the outcome of voting on Fire District 23's levy remained in doubt at the end of last week. Of the ballots that were counted through Friday, 306 were in favor of the levy and 305 were against it. A simple majority will decide whether the measure passes or fails. According to Pierce County's elections department, 646 of the 814 ballots that were sent to voters in the district had been returned, meaning 35 remained to be counted after last Friday. Roughly one week remains in the vote-counting. The final, official result will be certified by election officials Nov. 27. If Proposition 1 hangs onto its narrow lead and passes, it will be a reversal of the first time it went before voters. The measure was rejected in the primary election in August by five votes (163 to 158) in a much smaller voter turnout.
