Fire to be contained Oct. 1

Officials involved in efforts to control a forest fire near Alder Lake are estimating it will be contained by Oct. 1. By that date, the fire will have been burning for about two months, but headway against the blaze is being reported this week. The U.S. Forest Service said Thursday that the fire is17 percent contained, and that recent rain showers have helped. The primary objective of firefighting efforts is to stop the eastward spread of fire, which has burned 280 acres while steadily growing to the east, west and north, officials said. They said the fire "continues to smolder under the thick canopyGÇ¥ of timber in the area of rocky, steep terrain on the Lewis County side of the lake. One of the nearest points on the Pierce County side is Elbe, about four miles from the fire location. The Forest Service said 124 personnel are involved in the firefighting.
