Fireplaces and wood stoves banned temporarily

Pierce County began this week under a Stage 2 burn ban, which includes fireplaces, wood stoves, fireplace inserts and pellet stoves. Under the ban that took effect Sunday afternoon and is scheduled to continue until further notice, residents were urged to use other sources of heat for their homes. The only exception is if fireplaces or stoves are the only source of heat, officials said. Fine-particle air pollution levels spiked in Pierce County last weekend, especially in neighborhoods where wood-burning is common, according to the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency. Adding to the problem were weather forecasts of continued cold temperatures and low or no wind GÇô a condition that triggered the ban. Also outlawed during the ban are outdoor fires.
