First marijuana retailers can start selling

The state Liquor Control Board issued Washington's first 24 marijuana retailer licenses Monday, allowing the new voter-approved businesses to open. The 24 applicants were notified by e-mail of their license approvals. Following a 24 hour quarantine period, they may begin transporting products to retail stores and begin selling marijuana after product information in a tracking system. Some of the newly licenses businesses reportedly planned to begin sales as early as Tuesday. Of the 24 marijuana retailers who received their licenses, the only ones in Pierce County are two in Tacoma'Creative Retail Management at 7046 Pacific Ave. and Space at 3111 S. Pine St. Others range from Bellingham to Vancouver in western Washington, and from Spokane to Wenatchee east of the Cascades. A full list is on the Liquor Control Board's web site. The businesses represent the first of 334 licenses allotted by the state for retail sales that have successfully completed the licensing process. Thirty-one locations have been allotted in Pierce County. Locations statewide that receive licenses are selected by taking into account population, geographic dispersion and the individual applicant's readiness to be licensed, according to the Liquor Control Board.
