Fund-raising underway for Kids Trek

A drive to raise $40,000 in support of a new children's feature at Northwest Trek is in the stretch run. The Northwest Trek Foundation is trying to raise the 40k amount in 40 days to celebrate the Eatonville-area wildlife park's 40th birthday and to benefit the Kids' Trek nature-themed play area that is scheduled to open next year. To participate in the fund-raising, which started the weekend of May 30, the public can pledge to raise $1,000 through individual events such as walks, runs, garage sales, car washes and bake sales, or make a donation at www.nwtrek.org/kids-trek. Although construction has already begun on Kids' Trek, additional funds are needed to complete the project, Northwest Trek officials said. The half-acre area awill encourage outdoor play and promote a greater appreciation of the environment among children who visit the wildlife park, according to Alan Varsik, deputy director of the wildlife park. "We're building for the future GÇô all of the children who visit Northwest Trek,GÇ¥ said Varsik. "Kids' Trek will provide children with a place for fun exercise while at the same time stimulating their imaginations and helping them to learn more about the world around them.GÇ¥-á When completed and opened next year, the $1.9 million addition will include climbing, balance and agility challenges, multi-level play and adventure areas with stairs, bridges, tunnels, overlooks, a slide and lots of interactive play and learning activities. Parts will be set aside for toddlers and will be ADA-accessible, officials said Funds from a 2014 Metro Parks Tacoma voter-approved bond issue, grants and donations from businesses and individuals will pay the construction costs. Northwest Trek Foundation is leading the fund-raising effort.-á The drive will conclude next month during Northwest Trek's 40th birthday three-day celebration July 17-19 The actual birthday is on July 17.
