On behalf of the South Pierce County Historical Society, I would like to thank The Dispatch for its article and photo in the Jan. 6 issue, reporting the Eatonville Town Council's unanimous decision to approve the Society's plans to move and restore the Tofu House. This historic building will help to interpret the story of the town's Japanese-American residents, who worked in the lumber mill, operated the mill's dairy and made many lifelong friends with other townspeople from the early 1900s to just prior to America's entry into World War II. This publicity is vital to building support among the town's current and former residents to make this project a reality. Our small organization, taking on this large project, is seeking financial support from a range of sources, but the key component of this support will need to come from local residents interested in our colorful history, because it is that grassroots support that will show other funders that Eatonville cherishes its roots. Donations are encouraged, are critical to the project's timely completion, and are greatly appreciated. They may be sent to SPCHS, Attn: Tofu House Project, P.O. Box 1966, Eatonville, WA 98328.
