The state Department of Transportation (DOT) will temporarily open a closed section of State Route 7 to accommodate traffic this weekend that's expected to be higher than normal because of people driving to Morton to attend the Morton Loggers Jubilee. The five-mile section of highway, now closed between Alder and La Grande for work related to previous landslides, will open between 7 a.m. Aug. 8, and 6 a.m. Aug. 13. The closure and a detour that uses State Route 161 and Alder Cutoff Road will resume when the highway closes again next Tuesday. A second temporary opening of SR-7 is scheduled over Labor Day weekend. The highway will open at 6 a.m. Aug. 30 and close at 6 a.m. Sept. 3. DOT closed the highway in early July to allow crews to build a permanent debris containment wall at a site of a previous landslide in Alder Canyon. The work is expected to last through November.
