Motorists on State Route 7 in south Pierce County will encounter one-way, alternating traffic over the next two weeks as they approach Muck Creek near Weiler Road, the state Department of Transportation (DOT) announced Thursday. Starting at 7 a.m. Sept. 20, the two-lane highway will be reduced to one lane around the clock through 7 a.m. Oct. 4. During that time, construction crews working for the DOT will replace a culvert that allows Muck Creek to run under the highway. If the work is completed before Oct. 4, crews will reopen the highway to two lanes sooner than scheduled, a DOT spokeswoman said. This traffic control restriction will not be new to motorists, who have already encountered occasional one-way traffic restrictions at the project site. What will be new is reducing the highway to one lane 24 hours a day. With the end of summer approaching, crews will work long shifts over the next two weeks to install the culvert. Once the culvert is in place, crews will do final roadway paving and striping to complete the project. Flaggers will provide traffic control at the site. Motorists can expect delays of up to 10 minutes and should plan extra travel time to reach their destinations, the DOT spokeswoman said.
